Meet Sugar Bear — a sweetheart with a heart as big as his smile. This handsome guy recently underwent a rear leg amputation after battling a severe infection, and he’s already proving what a resilient, loving pup he is. Despite everything he’s been through, Sugar Bear remains incredibly sweet, affectionate, and eager for human companionship.

Sugar Bear is adjusting well to life as a tripod and is eating great, recovering beautifully, and ready to trade kennel life for a cozy home environment. He does have some kennel anxiety and would much rather be near his people than stuck behind a door — we don’t blame him! Outside of the clinic stress, he’s been described as a very sweet dog who likely just has some pent-up energy and wants comfort and connection.

He also has a luxating patella in his remaining back leg, but he uses it well and gets around impressively. To help him thrive long-term, Sugar Bear will benefit from staying lean, taking joint supplements and fish oil, and enjoying a balanced lifestyle with love and moderate activity once he’s healed.

Right now, Sugar Bear needs a foster or adopter who can help him through his recovery period by keeping him calm, comfy, and showered with affection. He’ll need some medications, activity restriction, and an e-collar while he heals, but in return you’ll get one incredibly grateful companion.

INTERESTED IN FOSTERING?

This pup is currently located at our Town Lake Animal Center (1156 W. Cesar Chavez, but use 1200 Reserve Road for mapping purposes). We'd love to show them off to you! To learn more about them, head in any day between 12:00PM - 6:00PM. We are open 7 days a week! Go to Building B and ask to speak with a Matchmaker about fostering this pup. You will sit down and discuss all we know about them and, if it's a good fit, get to meet them then! Please budget for a wait time unless you arrive right at opening as we cannot dictate walk-in traffic (wait times tend to be highest in the evenings and on weekends). If this pup ends up not being the best fit, we have so many other pups in need that we can suggest for your household on the spot!
